Senior Manager, Software Engineering-Tokyo

We are expanding our Japan Regional Development Centre, which has built market-leading products for the Japanese general insurance market for over a decade.
We are looking for a hands-on engineering leader to join us on this journey!You will have the opportunity to impact and contribute to a complex application suite of products that generate over 500 million dollars of revenue annually, mission-critical to 100+ enterprises, and serving more than a million users.As a Senior Manager of Software Engineering at Guidewire you will be hands-on, as you empower, and support between 3 to 6 self-sufficient teams.

The day-to-day:

  • Govern the application development activities of multiple agile/scrum teams for the world’s leading Insurance Platform.
  • Coordinate the design, analysis, development, debugging, and improvement of Guidewire’s insurance products in the world market.
  • Attract, retain, develop, and motivate top-notch engineering talent.
  • Ensure effective collaboration and communication within the team and teams and with peers and stakeholders across the organisation.
  • Mentor your team members, including assisting them with career growth and personal development.
  • Collaborate with other managers and teams to execute the roadmap and ensure the successful delivery of our insurance products.
  • Trust your team, and be trusted by your manager and colleagues to make good decisions.
  • Proactively communicate with senior leadership and drive change.

What skills or experience do I need to have?

  • 10+ years of software development experience, especially in SaaS and/or PaaS
  • 4+ years of proven experience in managing software engineers, including performance and career management
  • 2+ years of leading and managing multiple Agile/Scrum teams in software product development
  • Business-level proficiency in English and Japanese, with excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A ceaseless desire to improve how things get done, a strong promoter of automation
  • Fluency in one of the object-oriented languages such as Java, Go, C#, etc.
  • An advocate of DDD, BDD, TDD, and API-first design
  • Understanding of cloud services and architecture like Docker, K8s
  • Mentoring others on technical topics and processes
  • Leading projects from inception to completion with collaboration across teams
  • Risk mitigation and handling dependencies
  • A calm, rational demeanour under pressure. Having a sense of humour helps!
