Staff Software Engineer, Datastores

Remote (US, UK, Canada or Netherlands)

We all have important information we need to manage, and protecting it should be easy. Over 100,000 businesses and millions of people log in to 1Password to unlock smart, simple access to everything they care about. Our vision is to create a safer, simpler digital future for everyone, and our culture values simplicity, honesty and a human-centric approach to solving problems. Come help us unlock peace of mind so everyone can stay safer online.
The Infrastructure Services group focuses on building the foundational backend platforms on which our products rely. We’re responsible for building scalable, reliable, and performant backend frameworks, services, APIs, libraries, and tools that make it easy for products to interface with the infrastructure the organization uses.
In this role, you will be part software engineer, part database expert. You will spend much of your time either directly, or through other engineers, making application changes to improve database performance, scalability and reliability, and delivering foundational database solutions and best practices for our backend engineering teams. Your customers will be the hundreds of engineers, operations, and security folk within the company.
Note: this role is focused on application changes and explicitly not an infrastructure or operational role, though you will be empowered to drive infrastructure or operational changes when needed.

What we're looking for:

  • You have significant (5+ years) professional software engineering experience in software engineering roles utilizing cloud-based MySQL instances in large production environments (bonus points for Amazon Aurora)
  • Expert-level understanding of relational databases, SQL and query optimization techniques and demonstrated ability to both diagnose and prevent performance problems
  • Expert-level understanding of the internals of MySQL
  • Demonstrated capacity to clearly and concisely communicate about complex technical, architectural, and/or organizational problems and propose thorough iterative solutions
  • You’re able to influence and drive conversations with multiple stakeholders, ensuring alignment and understanding across many levels of the company
  • You have experience working on products with millions of users distributed globally
  • You have an excellent set of written and oral communication skills, are able to drive discussions with both technical and non-technical audiences, and an ability to describe projects that you or the team is working on with confidence and depth of understanding

What you can expect:

  • Pro-actively identify database performance impediments and resolve them by proposing and delivering changes. You will own this process end-to-end, from triaging issues to verifying your solution in production
  • Identify problematic database patterns by analyzing our workloads and implementing or driving solutions, e.g., implementing a partitioning strategy framework for large tables, or improving our overall uptime through better migration strategies
  • Deliver application changes that allow us to scale the application and its database further and make sure we’re prepared for our future data growth
  • Providing database expertise to engineering teams through code reviews, pairing and training to help deliver optimal database designs and queries
  • Create and incrementally improve documentation to reduce tribal knowledge, including:
  • Database best practices- Workflows and database team processes- Target architecture and long term scalability considerations- Improving tooling to detect performance bottlenecks early in the development cycle Even if you don't tick all those boxes, we want to hear from you. We understand that everyone's experiences are unique.
The most important thing you can bring to this job is the drive to dive in, get the work done, and fix root causes instead of treating symptoms. If you bring a desire to do the right thing for our customers, a sense of ownership over the product you work on, and a focus on shipping quality code, we want to hear from you.
United States-based roles only: The Annual salary for this role is between $180,000USD and $244,000USD, plus immediate participation in 1Password’s benefits program (health, dental, 401k and many others), utilization of our generous paid time off and, where applicable, participation in our incentive programs. All employees are owners of 1Password and receive an equity grant as part of their total package. At 1Password, we approach each individual's compensation with a promise of fair market value and internal equity commensurate with experience and specific skill set.
